Civil Protection<\/h2>\n

Civil Protection<\/strong> is a very important area for an organised state. It is defined as the set of actions which, through specific planning, mobilises all available resources in order to protect the life, property, and environment of its citizens\u2014individually, collectively, or at the community level.<\/p>\n

Actions are divided into preventive<\/strong> and operational<\/strong> measures, aimed at addressing risks that potentially threaten the above. Such threats, in peacetime, include severe weather events, natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, floods, heavy snowfall and frost, landslides, man-made or technological accidents, and both urban and forest fires.<\/p>\n

Both at the prevention and operational level, planning is being developed with memoranda of understanding and participation of all stakeholders. The outcome of such an operation and its successful development ultimately depends on the excellence of the planning, the use of all the human and technical resources and the necessary logistical infrastructure on a case-by-case basis. The important area of prevention is and has been the concern of the organized state in terms of avoiding loss of human lives and destruction of infrastructure on a case-by-case basis in planning as well as in taking measures. For this reason, prevention instructions are issued by experts and specifications for construction and infrastructure are set, involving all institutions and services, national and international, as appropriate (civil protection, emergency medical services, public utility company, public utility company, OTE, EIDAP, port authority, army, army, EAS, OASP, KELPNO, OSK, Pol. Air Force, Forestry, Hospitals, Hospitals, Water and Power. Ministries, Ministries, Highways, Railway, Municipalities, Communities, Regions, EU) and any others involved as appropriate.<\/p>\n

Protection measures for citizens<\/h4>\n

According to the guidelines of the General Secretariat for Civil Protection, citizens are advised to be particularly cautious and to take appropriate measures to protect themselves from risks arising from severe weather phenomena.<\/p>\n

– Secure objects that may cause damage or injury if they are swept away by severe weather.<\/p>\n

– Ensure that the gutters and downspouts of the houses are not blocked and are functioning properly.<\/p>\n

Avoid crossing torrents and streams, on foot or by vehicle, during storms and rainstorms, and for several hours after the end of the event<\/p>\n

– Avoid outdoor work and activities in marine and coastal areas during severe weather events (risk of lightning strikes).<\/p>\n

– Take shelter immediately during a hailstorm. Take shelter in a building or car and do not leave the safe area until you are sure the storm has passed. Hail can be very dangerous for animals as well. <\/p>\n

– Avoid crossing under large trees, under posted signs and generally from areas where light objects (e.g. pots, broken glass, etc.) can become detached and fall to the ground (e.g. under balconies).<\/p>\n

– Follow strictly the instructions of the local authorities, such as the Traffic Police etc.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n

If they are going to move by car:<\/strong><\/p>\n

– To be informed about the weather and the state of the road network<\/p>\n

– Have anti-slip chains and a full tank of fuel in their vehicle<\/p>\n

– Travel, if necessary, preferably during the day, preferably on main roads<\/p>\n

– Inform their family members about the route they are going to take<\/p>\n

– Change their travel schedule to avoid the peak weather events<\/p>\n

– Follow strictly the instructions of the local authorities, such as the Traffic Police etc.<\/p>\n

If they move on foot :<\/strong><\/p>\n

– Dress in several layers of light clothing instead of one heavy garment and wear appropriate shoes to avoid injuries due to slipperiness<\/p>\n

– Avoid unnecessary travel during peak weather conditions (heavy snowfall, frost conditions).<\/p>\n
